Wasted Continuum

I got my long awaited Canon EOS 5D Mark II today. It is an amazing piece of machinery. I’ve been playing with it all day. The colors and contrasts are ridiculously sweet. A lot of what makes it good does not show up in the final product. Most of what it does is give me a ton more control and flexibility over my Rebel XT. I don’t know if that makes sense, but that’s how it is for me. You can visit my Flickr to see the new photos.

I finally received my T-Mobile G1 on Wednesday. I have been waiting to get a good smartphone for the longest time. I had my Motorola Razr for roughly four years. It finally broke down on me in January and I have been using an old Samsung slider to hold me over until now. I have used it for two full days now, but I haven’t fallen into a normal day with it yet. I still find myself playing with it on and off all day long which affects the battery life a lot. I will talk about that a little later.

I know you all are excited. I am too. Today, Steve Jobs will take the stage at the Apple event and reveal the shiny, new MacBook line. I love Apple, but part of their marketing strategy is exactly what the car industry does. Every year they come out with a cooler looking model. Even though your recently purchased MacBook or iPod is still perfectly fine, it starts to look outdated compared to the new model.

But people, please don’t push aside your current MacBooks and gawk at the new kid in town. Your MacBook has been there for you. Every time you wanted to do some work at a coffeeshop, your MacBook was there. Every time your flight is delayed and you don’t want crack open one of those book things, your MacBook was there. Every time you go to a family function and need to pretend you have important work to avoid talking to your drunk uncle, your MacBook was there.

So please people, when the Jobs is up there showing off the new MacBooks with his cool looking slides and “BOOMS”, I want you to remember the loving laptop that’s been there for you all those time.

I’ve ranted enough. Go now and give your MacBook a hug. Better yet, take a photo of it and post it on Flickr. You can post a link of it on my photo and we’ll have a nice group MacBook hug.

Of course, if you don’t have a MacBook of any kind, you should probably order one of the new ones. I bet you they’ll look super cool and I know that you’ll love it like I love my MacBook Pro.

The day has finally come when Android will land for real. T-Mobile will hold a press conference to announce the first Android OS phone tomorrow morning at 9:30am central time. They have already launched a T-Mobile G1 site. Yes, you read that correctly. The phone we all thought would be named the HTC Dream, is apparently being named the G1. I think they should of stuck with Dream. Much catchier than G1. TmoNews just leaked some of the latest info on the G1. You can check out the rundown on the specs there. Not sure how accurate it is, but nowadays, I just don’t think these companies keep things under wrap to well anymore. Anyway, I’m psyched and I really just want to see this thing in person. If it is as good as some of the hype I’ve been hearing, I will likely get one for myself.

I finally got a second drive for my Drobo today. I’ve a 500GB drive in there since I originally got the storage robot back in April. Having only one drive did not provide protection against drive failure so I didn’t really use my Drobo yet. Today, I got my 750GB hard drive that I added to it. Now, according to my Drobo Dashboard, I have 461.42GB of protected data. I already backed up all my digital photos on there. That was a huge relief. That’s one of the major reason why I bought the Drobo. Next, I will back up my movies and my music on there. The Drobo is just so easy to use. I have to recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want to deal with a RAID system and doesn’t want to worry about their sole backup drive failing on them. As of right now, Amazon is selling it for $474.67.

I wrote this last night, but had server problems. They are resolved now.

I got my Drobo today. The construction on it is solid. It looks very slick. I haven’t booted it up yet. It actually suggests using two hard drives to begin with. I only have one 500GB right now. I think I might buy another one. There’s a Maxtor 500 on Amazon for $89.99. That’s not bad at all. I’ll have photos up soon.
