Cooking: Perfection in a Blade

Published by JavaJunky under Cooking

Global G-2 Chef Knife

Originally uploaded by JavaJunky

After almost snapping the blade off my crappy old chef knife while cutting a cold carrot, I decided I needed to get a new one. I did a bit of research on it and read a lot of opinions. I already knew about Wustof knives. Who hasn’t? I then discovered Global, a Japanese knife company, who several famous chefs recommends. After some research, I saw that Williams-Sonoma sells them. I went to the one in Rosedale and spent a good half an hour trying out the different chef knives including the Global. I think it was the first time I chopped and minced vegetables in the middle of a shopping mall.

After taking it home and playing with it I have determined that this has got to be considered a perfect chef knife. It’s handle fits my hands exactly. Where the handle meets the blade is beveled like a standard Chinese vegetable knife. That made it feel very comfortable for me. It’s ridiculously light, yet heavy enough to feel solid. It’s sharp as a samurai sword. The blade and the handle is balanced evenly. And lastly, it looks frickin cool.

If you are looking for a chef knife, do yourself a favor and try out a Global. I don’t think you’d be sorry. This knife makes me wish I was food prepping at the restaurant again, just so I can cut all day long. That says a lot.

Tech: WTF is a Sony Drive?

Published by JavaJunky under Tech

Sony DriveSony’s Japan site is teasing us with a weird image of what looks like a lamp base covered by a pretty bow. I have no clue what it would be. Is it another proprietary storage unit destined to fade away? I guess we have to wait to find out. I’m wondering if it’s a media center. That’s all the rage right now. It doesn’t look like one though. I just want to know if I want one.

Wasted Continuum: WordPress v2.3 Upgrade

Published by JavaJunky under Wasted Continuum

WordPress Logo I have just upgraded to WordPress v2.3. Seems to be working fine. This is my test post to see if my plug ins are working properly. Hopefully this gets pushed out to my Xanga and Facebook. The big new feature of 2.3 is the addition of tags. I have been treating my categories as tags, but I am going to try and migrate to using actual tags and reorder my categories. This upgrade also forced me to backup my site. This is something that I need to remember to do more frequently.

Running: 5K with Bourdain

Published by JavaJunky under Running

After a little shopping at Rosedale and Target to replenish my kitchen tools, I went to Central to do a quick 5K. Not at all my quickest, but it was good. I wasn’t aiming to break any records today. I think my goal for this week is to keep running the 5K’s until it’s cake. Then, next week, I’ll start pushing myself to make better time. I ran without music today. I just listened to “Kitchen Confidential” by Mr. Tony Bourdain. I listened to two chapters. It’s a little different than listening to music. I think I could of ran a lot longer since I ran at a slower pace.

Apple: 1.1.1 Sends iPhone Into Limbo

Published by JavaJunky under Hacking

iPhoneApple has released the v1.1.1 iPhone update and it seems that it is not exactly bricking the unlock phones, but is putting them in limbo. You can’t reactivate the unlocked phone without an AT&T sim card. Hopefully the Dev Team along with others will figure a way to fix it. I didn’t think Apple had it in them to brick all these phones. I’m glad I didn’t jump the gun and buy one. I’m sure I’m not alone now.

Running: 20 Minutes With Rain and Lightning

Published by JavaJunky under Nike+, Personal, Running

Good run today. I needed it. I set my time to 20 minutes and just ran at a decent pace. My hamstring was a little stressed from yesterday, but today’s light run helped loosen it. I have to remember not to push too hard. I think I’m doing quite well considering that I only started my whole running regiment in August. It was dawn again today. It did start raining half way through and there was a lot of lightning. I wish I had my camera.
